Hello everyone I have just been on an assertiveness course yesterday and when I got home I was trying it out on my kids. However my wife told them to ignore me as I have been on an insertiveness course. How can I tell it worked then?

A firm request, and learning to listen to them and allowing them to express their own opinions, is all that's needed. I think assertiveness courses can bode well in the workplace, but at home, showing - and receiving - mutual respect eventually gets the desired effect. Your wife needs to back you up on certain issues as well.
Not always a bad thing though, is it? Being too assertive can come over as aggressive if a person doesn't know how to express him or herself properly. Personally, I'd much rather be nice and polite to people, than make demands, but we employ people, and sometimes I have to make my wishes known. I never ask anything of people that I wouldn't try to tackle myself, so leading by example works. In the home, I defer to my husband - on the surface!!!! He genuinely makes the right decisions, but I have an input, & then let him think he's thought of stuff all by himself!! however, when I might repeat an instance to people, I always say: "Yes, WE thought so..." or "WE agreed...."
