You probably already know that Marjoram is consider to be a variety of Oregano... in fact it's scientific classification is Origanum majorana... therefore its used in most italian dishes and other such fare that would require the flavoring of Oregano. It shouldn't be used, as you infer, in mildly flavored dishes, since it can overpower the subtelties inherent is such cuisine. However, recipes in which lots of meats, especially pork and sausage, are predominant... herb away. I find it more lasting that fresh Oregano, though with a slightly more bitter ending taste. Certainly not unpleasant though...
From your description it may not be marjoram but it could be tarragon This has long,thin,lance-like leaves and has a distinctive anis-seed like scent. Even if it isn't Tarragon-get some! It's lovely with chicken.
It's also lovely with fish!

If you do have marjoram, keep it contained - we now have it growing in clumps all over the garden!!
a couple across the road from me were growing herbs indoors, the police came at 6am and were still taking plants and stuff out at 4-40pm
