You need a tri-band phone if you want to use it in the USA and a couple of other places. A dual band phone will work in UK & Europe, Africa etc.

Thus youcan use a tri-band phone anywhere.

Tri-bands work almost everywhere.  They do not work in Japan or Argentina, and probably some other places as well

Most cellphones sold in the UK are dual band.

800/900 MHz & 1800 MHz

When I was in Canada & USA I bought a tri-band phone,

800/900 MHz, 1800 MHz & 1900MHz  (1900MHz the frequency used in USA/Canada)
