I find St Tropez everyday to be the best one. It isn't completely smudgeproof, but as it is a body lotion with a bit of self tan, it is lighter in colour (ie suitable for pale skin) and because you build the colour up everyday, mistakes aren't as noticeable.
It is a bit more expensive, but is a much more natural colour than other cheaper brands, and also doesn't have that strong fake tan smell that some of them have

I'm usually hopeless at applying these things but I'm trying out the Neutrogena nourishing body glow moisuriser at the moment which builds a tan gradually. So far (day4) it's looking ok! It's half price in Boots at the moment - one of the reasons I bought it, the other one being it wouldn't have mattered if I'd turned orange while it's still cold & I'm well covered. :o)
