If you pointed a finger in my face I'd growl at you and if you didn't stop then I'd bite you.
Top answer Natalie!  My dog used to playfully snap at people when then pointed at her, I think they must find it very annoying, just like we do.
Cats hate it - If ever my cat misbehaves you just point at him and tell him off and he responds.
I never heard of this. I have trained my dogs to sit when pointed at.
well if I point a finger at my dog, she doesn't do anything, she has learned to sit when I raise my finger and point upwards. I would imagine that its not just the pointed finger, but the whole body posture including the stare that goes with it.

ezapf   We have trained one of our dogs to sit when you point at her.    It's handy when Led Zep is on full blast and she can't hear any commands!

Some animals can't stand being stared at either.  My son was staring at a monkey once and laughing because the monkey was staring back at him.  It wasn't funny when the monkey decided to attack him!

I was attacked by a German Shepherd once just for staring in his eyes, so yes I think pointing a finger is intimitating.
Pointing amongst humans is considered an aggressive behaviour.  If we're debating a topic and I point at you and "stab" my finger towards you as I argue my point, you would rightly consider that a sign of aggression on my part.  Psychologists who study human behaviour all concur on this; it's written in every book about "body language".  Dogs must be able to sense that aggressiveness in pointing as well.  Dogs have very human-like emotions and can sense what our emotions are, too.  If they sense aggression in us, they will act that way back to us in self-defence.
yes a agree it may seem to be agressive behaver...well when i point a finger at my cats..well 1 in perticuala she just sniffes it or licks it she doesn't care..
