my cat will not use the litter box.  she goes on the carpet next to the box

That might mean that you're not using a type of litter that she likes. Some cats also seem to like pooing in 1 tray & weeing in a different one.

If you're using a particularly gravely litter, try a softer type. In fact when faced with this problem, I get several trays & fill them with different types to see if that makes a difference. Your cat seems to be saying that she prefers the softer carpet, to whatever you're offering so it's worth a go. She is definitely telling you that something's not right.

Also, if it persists, I'd wonder if she didn't have cystitis. Sometimes a cat will associate the tray with pain & chose to go elsewhere...just a thought.

Try moving the litter tray somewhere else (not far though) and spraying that area of carpet with something strong smelling, like detol spray (seeing as it has antibacterial qualities too).  That should put the cat off using that particular area.

Usually what draws cats back to use the same area is smell more than anything else, so it could solve your problems.

make sure that your tray is totally clean at all times and in a quiet place because cats are fussy so and so's! and try not to be around when she goes to do her buisness, because they hate to be watched! Also i agree with trying a different litter maybe a wood based litter or a gel type one?

i had a cat u hated kitty litter... yes probably ur cat just doesn't like the tipe of litter u use... all my cats use out side they prefer it and if they did have to uses a kitty litter we just used soil cuz thats all they will use....

and to u why do u hate cats..??? there lovely inteligent animals...but hey i hate dogs..!!! there incredibly stupid animals and i'm not gonna get into that now...
