cancelling holiday

have paid �100 deposit, have to pay further 600 in 8 wks, want to cancell, do we have to pay the further 600.

The general rule is that the later you leave the cancellation, the more you'll have to pay.

However, every company will have its own terms and conditions. You either need to read the small print or tell us which travel company you've booked with, so that we can find the answer for you.

have booked this holiday with first choice, not going until june next year, is a group booking,
I've come to the conclusion that the First Choice website is one of the most unhelpful I've ever come across! After extensive searching, the only reference to cancellations I can find simply states that if you pay the �25 online deposit, and then cancel, you have to pay the rest of the full deposit:

That link makes reference to First Choice's 'standard terms and conditions' but they don't seem to have those terms and conditions available for people to read!

I suspect that, if you've only paid a discounted deposit and the additional money is referred to as a 'deposit top-up', you will have to pay the extra amount if you cancel. However, if the money you've paid is the full deposit and the extra amount completes the full payment, you'd probably only lose the �100 upon cancellation prior to the due date for the �600 payment.

I'm sorry that's a bit vague but, as I've stated, the First Choice website is far from helpful. (It makes reference to group bookings but doesn't allow you to search for them. Further, it won't permit any searches for June 2009; I'm surprised that they've accepted a booking that far ahead).

The only way to get a definite answer would seem to be to phone First choice or to send them an e-mail:

thanks that does help, i thought as much, the �600 was the top up deposit, but i do not agree with paying the rest, as due to circumstances, we just can not go, and do not want to pay for something we are not going on, as it was a group booking, i am not the lead passenger, so obviously friction within the family as sister-in-law is liable to pay the depost and not me, cheers
Maybe you could share it within the group? It may stop bad feeling in the family?
you will definitely have to pay the rest of the deposit. Maybe you could be cheeky and purchase annual insurance cheaply then in a few weeks if you have a legit reason to cancel and can prove it you could claim it back
