I am writing this for my friend, as we have discussed whats going on and really do not know what to do. This is what happened and is happening, my friends partner was on his way home from work one day and was driving whilst very tired, he had an accident which resulted in a fatality, he nearly lost his life as well, the police said it was careless driving, he is a gentle man and has been distraught over it ever since it happened, the problem that my friend has is that he is going to be sentenced on friday, the family are concerned as he has now shut off from all of them, including his mum and dad, he wont talk to anybody, wont eat, and is in bed all day, his mind is in a very fragile state and they are worried that he may contemplate suicide, they were worried about this shortly after the accident, but now its as if he has reached an all time low, we dont know what is going on inside his head, this is his last week with his family and they cant understand why he has cut off from them all, my friend tries to cuddle him etc and he pushes her away, she has tried to persist but then he gets angry and still pushes her away, she has asked him questions and he just wont answer anything....has anyone ever been in this situation or does anyone have any resolutions, because we just dont know what to do to help him.

I would say if he refuses to talk, then your friend should sit down and write a letter to him telling him how much he is loved, also that she is feeling a lot of pain as well, because she wants to be by his side, and that once the court case has been, she will always be beside him and will always love him, he obviously blames himself for what happened, he is punishing himself and probably feels he does not deserve to be loved, and he will have to pay the price for that, but at the moment he is also punishing everybody that loves him, he can't turn the clock back although he would love to, he has got to face it, he also needs to go and see his doctor because he could be going into a state of real shock and depression, wish you good luck, take care and hope you can get through to him, Ray xx

Thankyou Ray, your comments have been very much appreciated -x-
What has his solicitor told him? that he is ,likely to receive a custodial sectence? I am not sure that would happen, what has he been charged with? Was he tried in a magistrates court or did it go to the crown court? Who has told him the sentencing might involve prison term??

He was charged with death by careless driving, it was refered to crown court, he is definately going to be sentenced on Friday
So if he's being sentanced then I as I understand it he'll have already been found guilty of this? All that anyone can do is keep an eye on him and be there for him without closetting him which when you're very depressed is irrationally irritating too. I would suggest it also needs mentioning during the sentancing so the proper arragnegements can be in place if he's facing a prison term but I'd know nothing about doing that so it might be best to ask about that aspect of things in Law.
