Its good to see you are researching this before taking the plunge and getting some on a whim or something.
But apparenlty GP's like being picked up etc so I would start asap. And do a search round on the 'net for more info.
Start handling them as soon as possible. You need to hold it so that it is supported under its bottom and if you stroke it and talk to it gently it will soon learn to trust you. I sit with mine on my lap and offer him some food and he is fine now (Guinea pigs love eating!). However even very tame guinea pigs often run away when you go to pick them up so don't worry too much. As long as you can pick them up and handle them confidently they settle very quickly.
They are lovely, gentle little animals and have lots of character so good luck with yours.
They will always be jittery and run away unless you bribe with some tasty greens and things our one loves being handled and my daughter started picking him up straight away just be calm in voice and have food handy! good luck x

i have gunie pigs and know alot about them !
for # 1.) depends on the gunie pig we had a medium cage and could pick them up by the 2nd day they will still run away but thats how they get used to you
2.)when you start picking them up and giving them treats depends how much u do that !
