build a wall or plant a hedge?
which is cheaper? We live on a corner plot and have a massive wall tthat needs rebuilding and just don't have the money.
Is there a way of getting a wall build cheaply? I wondered if construction students at the local college would do it - or is that a bit risky?
Are privets dear? How fast do they grow?

Take down the wall to prevent accidents.
If you want a hedge it will take time to grow. The faster it grows in the beginning the more maintenance you will have to do in the coming years - cutting & removing rubbish.
I suggest a basic fence, just posts & wire. This can be used to grow plants up or train a hedge. You could put in pannels instead of the wire, gradually, until you fence the whole thing but you'll have to treat the wood regularly. Or build brick piers & fill in with fence pannels. In time you could brick in the gaps until the wall is back.
If you take a bricklaying course you could do it yourself but by the time you've messed about I would just invest in having the wall repaired/ rebuilt. You might be able to save some money on the job by being the 'brickies' labourer.

i had to have my back and side wall renewed the cheapest way for me was concrete posts and then you have a choice of wooden inserts or concrete ones. i went for concrete as these are long lasting and strong. if you have any trouble with local idiots the wooden ones don't last long as they can kick them in.. you could also have a wall made out of breeze blocks these are cheaper than bricks but you still need a bricklayer to do them ( or a good builder ) whichever you decide to have done PLEASE get a FEW quotes. if you have any building work being done near your house have a chat with the people on the site .see if they will offer to do the job on the side for a decent price.hope this helps.
