How often do you/should you get one?
I want to ask my boss for one but am a bit scared. I have been here a year now and you should get one every year shouldn't you?

If you don't get an appraisal, why not ask for a meeting to discuss your job. Im not sure if after a year you should get one, but some jobs do offer a yearly evaluation, or go up with inflation!
If you're doing more than what you should be or your job has been given more duties, then it's worth asking for!

The only thing I have to add to the above answers, is to ensure that your pay is keeping in line with the legal minimum wage, which is the only wage rise your employer is legally bound to give you. Also check that you are receiving the legal minimum holiday allowance which rose last year and I believe it is rising again this year, to something like just under 5 weeks minimum. You can double check these by doing a search for legal minimum wage and holiday entitlement in a seach engine or a knowledable poster like Buildersmate may be able to inform you!
