a film with clocks and killing...

could someone let me know (if they can) what is the title of the movie where some people get sent to an island (they think it's a fbi training thing) but they each get killed one by one by booby traps. there is something to do with time/clocks also. a woman and a man survive. at one point they drink coffee and it knocks them all out. i think there is a clown involved somewhere too.

I believe you are thinking of Battle Royale, directed by Kinji Fukasaku.

It's about a group of japanese teenagers who are drugged and kidnapped and taken to an island where they are all fitted with radio transmitters around their necks. All are told that the devices contain explosives and any attempt to remove them wil result in their heads being blown off.

They are all set free on the island with the directions that only one may be allowed to live, and hence their aim is to kill each other until only one remains. They are also told if they do nothing, they will all be killed. There is a time limit imposed to assist in the tension. The film, whilst quite gory in places is more about the breakdown in social and peer group loyalty in response to such a stymulus.

The purpose of the experiment (I think) was to instill fear into a future generation of japanese teenagers who the government thought were getting out of hand.

There are several good DVD packages available, including a new Directors Cut released this year. Battle Royale 2 was also made, but in my opinion was inferior in quality.
