no UMD icon is displayed on my psp

hi my PSP is 5 days out of warranty and suddenly there is no UMD icon displayed in the game menu to select.I have tried several games and a UMD movie but none work
Has anyone else had the same problem or know of a solution please?
i have a 7 year old son is is a little upset about it!

first hav u tryed updating firmware on unit?if not do that first .
