Problem Using VLC 0.8.6f

When I try and play downloaded TV programmes the picture freezes for about 1-2 seconds every 5 to 10 minutes or so. I've been using VLC for a long time and have never had any problems until recently - I had to delete my hard drive and reload everything from scratch about 6 weeks ago and this is when the problem started. I'm not very technical and believe it might be that the newer version I have downloaded could be the cause. I googled and have found others have had the same problem. I have plenty of memory on my laptop and have even followed instructions to increase VLC's cache from 300 to 600 (I must admit this was all double Dutch to me but I did it anyway as this remedied someone else's problem). It's getting rather frustrating and confusing with all the terminology: 'codecs' and 'caches' etc. especially as to someone in the know it is probably relatively simple to correct.
Please help a simpleton.

I apologise that this isn't a 'proper' answer. (i.e. I can't tell you how to fix your problem with VLC). However,. I hope that it might still help.

I'm a great fan of VLC and I've often recommended it here on AB. However, I still find that there are a few files that VLC occasionally has problems with. I came across a recommendation for the GOM video player, which several people rated as far better than VLC. My own opinion is that it's a case of 'horses for courses'. (i.e. VLC is best for some files, GOM is best for others).

So, you might like to try GOM for viewing your downloaded files. Perhaps it will work where VLC won't? It's a free download, here:

1) Does it happen with all files, or just the latest one you downloaded?

2) Did you reinstall the latest driver for your graphics card, when you formatted your drive?

Chris, I too am a big fan of VLC and have also recommended it to others. I've heard of GOM before and will give it a whirl. Thanks for the link

fo3nix, it does seem to be the later downloads that are causing the problem. I mentioned earlier that I'm a bit thick when it comes to the technical stuff. All I did was use the same discs I had used when I first got my laptop two years ago.

Try downloading something else.

It could just be the files themselves that have issues, and not VLC.
