Puddicat you have a few good years in you yet. You don't say what field you want to go into (or come out of). Have you thought of temping for a bit? Then you can go to interviews without having to be underhand with your present employer (assuming you haven't told them yet) If you are retiring at 65 you might be working for another 12 years. That's a long time to be in a job you hate.

Hi all, I would say if you are not 100% happy in your job, pack it in and get another one, I am older than you puddicat, packed my job in as an electrician (self employed for 28 years) I was fed up working on contract to the council, didn't have another job, but found part time handymans job in care home, earning about a quarter of what I was but christ am I happy, pack it in and be happy, we only live once and spend a lot of time at work, so do it, good luck, hope you get something you like, Ray
theland .. and i hazard a guess , you are probably a time served engineer ,,,,, etc ,, one of the better ones , .... i did comr accross someone who was studying to be an Engineer , on a full time basis ..... he never got be a "hands on engineer " .... you did , well done , the trolley-sodding at Asda , well thats neither here or there ...
puddicat - I am sure you have many skills and you could do many things. It's a matter of confidence. I am your age and this week I was on an interview panel for a fairly demanding development job - we gave it to a 60 year old as she had the skill and passion needed for it.

bensmum its not always about high powered jobs, its about getting enough wages to enjoy life and enjoying the job, dont know what others think but i don t want to be in a demanding mentally or physical job, some of my seniors live the job and think i have given so much when i was younger i dont want the all seeing eye anymore!!!
I expect you could turn your hand to anything puddicat, it's never too late to change, I am planning to branch out on a new career when I reach 30.

Hi puddicat - what I meant was that employers don't always look at the age of the person. If someone is right for the job whether it's stacking shelves or running the country age should not be a barrier and no-one is ever too old to change and take up something new. I would love to have a less demanding job but my circumstances mean that I can't take a drop in salary
so bens mum the first person who posted a reply was looking to stack shelves a ex electrician wasnt right for the job ummmmmmmmm sorry thats a deluded way of thinking cos in the real world they turn down very experienced people for the lowest paid like students and numpties its got nothing to do with its not being the right person!!! you must be in a job that you wont be chosing shelve stackers!
