cat attacked by dog

I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE PUT THIS IN THE ANIMALS SECTION BUT I THOUGHT I MIGHT GET A QUICKER RESPONSE HERE.
my friends cat has been badly attacked by two rottweillers (sp) and its rectum has been torn out and its in a hell of a state
the owner said at the time she would pay the vets bill but now the bill has risen to �800. and she is refusing to pay.
what can my friend do?

Awww Christine, that is so sad. My thoughts are with your friend and poor little cat. Get her to call the RSPCA asap and explain everything thats happened. These dogs need muzzleing before they attack anything else.

christine - sorry to hear that, shock is a major problem for cats in situations like this. I do think the dog owner needs to look at her garden security and I imagine she won't be the most popular person in the neighbourhood.

If they can do this to a cat, it will be people next!!

Take the owners to court for the bill payment, they cannot be allowed to get away with this.

I am quite frightened of dogs and reading this has done nothing to allay my fears!

If the police can be bothered to go and check a six foot fence, why are they not bothered about the cat?

The police have told my friend that rotties are not classed as dangerous dogs and that she should contact the dog warden

Aww Chrissie -that sucks.

I am with the others who said that they werent under proper control -I know it doesnt look to hot for the cat but your friend must pursue this.

Thing is -its easy to be flippant and say its just a cat but my cat is like a child to me -he is a loved member of our family and I would be devasted if anything like this should happen to him.Really sad !

Christine..My point is, if the dogs are not classed as dangerous dogs, why do the police have the time to go and check on the new fence and not be bothered to follow up the attack on the cat?

Surely they should be more concerned about what happened and not what can happen?

oh christine please send your friend my love, and have my fingers and toes crossed that the cat makes it. im with agreement with everyone who has said your friend should pursue the matter, those dogs will do it again and it could be a child next. (i do rotties can also be soft i know ive met one who loved donuts and he lived with cats) im with drisgirl its not just a cat he/she is a much loved member of the family. if anyone or anything had ever hurt my patch i wouldnt have been responsible for my actions and im a mild mannered person. tell your friend to fight, theres a lot of cat lovers out there who will back her every step of the way.

Poor poor cat and your friends, it must be awful.

My aunt had a similar issue. Some local people had a dog they just used to let run loose (they don't believe in having them on a lead or secured!) and it came into my aunt's garden, not hard as it's a large country property with a large drive which isn't gated) and it killed one of her cats and the other one only narrowly escaped.

She has my two little cousins who are often out in the garden and I hate to imagine if it was one of those out in the garden.

The owners just weren't interested and even got quite nasty with my aunt.

I'd seriously suggest taking them to court or at least threatening to do so, I don't think your neighbours would be keen on the publicity especially if other people in the area have small animals and children.

Maybe consider going to the local paper and shaming them into paying for the treatment.

You could also threaten to have the dogs reported to someone other than the police as I'm sure they don't want to risk losing their dogs.

I note it also relates to dangerous dogs in a public place rather than a private garden.

Thanks for all your answers ,I am sad to say my friends cat passed away during the night.
the owners husband is now threatening my friends husband and they are now worried about reporting them

I am sorry to hear that christine - I was wondering how things were but it didn't sound too good last night.
You said that the dogs had killed another cat - what are the owners of that one doing? If threats are being made it is a case for the police surely
