Power Flush

My son's just been quoted a price of �250 for a power flush in his central heating system.

As this is unfamiliar territory can anyone tell me if this is a reasonable price, or not? Thank you.

our local gas board (hampshire) quoted me �1,000 for 12 radiators earlier this year

should add that the chap who quoted, said that in his opinion, it wasn't worth doing unless you had actual line blockage and that a cheaper option was to add fernox or its equivalent, run the system on continuous and hot for a day,or so  then drain and refil, adding fernox again. We looked into it because we have noisy start up, have eliminated vibrating pipes and a mate had suggested that it might be sediment at the pump

A powerflush is for the whole system, and is usually that expensive. But I agree with the latter advice, to use fernox to clean the system. Then when it is done add some inhibitor to keep the system clean.

Thank you both for your help. woofgang, I will certainly tell my son about Fernox as it sounds as though it might be the answer - or certainly an alternative.  As this flat is a fairly new purchase it looks as though it might be possible for him to be warm now as well!

richfo, Yes you're right it is the whole system that needs flushing. He needs a new pump, but that's not a problem, but as I  understand the whole lot has to be done together so it's something for him to think about - at least he knows the price is a fair one.

Friend had a similiar problem and was quoted around �800  by British Gas. My Dad solved it for her for free. Take each radiator off in turn ( requires a couple of strong lads), take it out into the garden , clean it through with your Power washer ( ie Karcher or similiar) and put radiators back on. Cleans out all the sludge in your radiators and helps your system run smoother. Time consuming but worth a try before forking out all the cash.

Thank you so much for your reply vicki. This idea would be great, but he's hampered by  living in a top flat without a garden - so very strong lads needed :-)

Your quote by British Gas is very helpful as it really confirms the original quote as being quite fair.
