Videos in Windows Movie Maker.
5 Answers
Can some very clever person help with this please? I've spent all day today putting a video together using Windows Movie Maker. The idea is to put it on You Tube. I've never used Movie Maker before, so I was feeling quite pleased with myself when I'd completed it, only to find that the You Tube web site says my video is an invalid file. It needs to be .WMV. What does that mean and how do I change it? At the moment, I think it's MSWMM. I would have thought there wouldn't be any problems with MS Windows files. Thanks.

The MSWMM file is the MM project file - it's basically the recipe for your movie and doesn't contain any of the ingredients (video and audio). To render a movie in MM go tho the "File" menu and click on "Save Movie File" and complete the rest of the steps in the "Save Movie Wizard". You can then save your movie out as a wmv file. I'd recommend you review the "Distribute Movies" section on PapaJohn's website as it has a lot of info on how to prepare a movie for upload to Youtube and some of the other video hosting sites.

You'll probably find the first part of the tutorial is telling you stuff you already know but hopefully the last part will be of some use to you.
To be honest, I haven't tried this method myself, I usually save my Windows Movie Maker video as an .avi file and then convert it to .mpeg using a different program. I use one called CAD KAS MPEG AVI DVD Cutter 1.00 because the conversion process is really quick (Be warned though, the trial version only allows you to edit 50% of your movie). Then I upload the finished .mpeg to YouTube.
