I'm fairly sure I have the quote and its author but can't find the exact source -- I've tried Google but with no success. Does anyone know the source, and does it appear anywhere on the web? (a cryptic hint, without giving too much away!) I only own one of the author's books; his "first and last novel" according to its forward (certainly not his only book) and can't find it in that (from a very rapid scan).
Could be, but I'm beginning to feel like a bad case of OCD,
because we're not actually asked for the source -- trouble is,
in theory, it's the only way to be 100% sure.
Might be the sort of thing buried in his many vols of war memoirs -- might try posting it on a fan site, if I can find an appropriate one?
I've decided to 'go with the flow' on this one and haven't spent much time trying to confirm the quote. I'm taking it as read that it's correct and that there are no hidden traps.
Elsewhere, it wouldn't be the same without the usual deliberate mistake. See 15a, where a reference is made to healthy plains rather than heathy plains...!!
I'm now going to follow suit, having spent far too much time trying to verify the quote. Somewhat spoils the CW; hope there's nothing silly I've missed. Many thanks, and good night to you all.
