I've done something stupid and sent an item out before the paypal payment cleared. It was due to clear today so I gave it to my boyfriend to post but forget to check and now I find the buyer has cancelled the payment. I've contacted him to find out why (but haven't told him I've sent it), but am now worried that he won't pay and won't send it back either.
I know it's my fault but just wondering if anyone knows what I can do in this situation? Any help gratefully received.

wait a few days try emailing him again you will not be out of pocket simply make a paypal claim and you should receive payment via them
I am confused as to why you had to wait for the paypal payment to clear but I really cant see paypal helping you if you sent the item before it did clear

Will be interested to hear

Daft thing is you can no longer leave them negative feedback

Some paypal payments have to clear, I think it's when they make a payment via their bank account. I've received them before and each time they've cleared ok, but this time it's telling me the buyer has cancelled the payment.

I think you may be right and it's my fault for sending it before the payment cleared.

Oh well thanks for your answers.
Did you send it by 'signed for' delivery so you can at least prove he received it?

Is the buyer's address verified for the purpose of PayPal?

Hi Fay,
Yes I sent it recorded delivery which needs a signature, and his address is confirmed.
But I couldn't find anything on paypal saying what to do next. I guess I'll wait to see his response but if he cancelled the payment I can't think it will be good.
Do you know what I should search for on paypal for help I just couldn't find the right thing.
Thanks loads
If the worst comes off (he does not send you money), ask him to return the goods.

If no reply comes, send a recorded letter to his home explaining that you will take him to the small claims court if he does not either pay for the goods or return them within 10 days.

If nothing comes within the 10 days, then post back about how to take someone to county court (no particularly difficult).

The only way you would have to wait for a PP payment to clear is if it was an e-cheque. The buyer cannot cancel an e-cheque only the seller can.
If he made the payment direct from his bank acc (linked to PP) then payment to the seller is instant. E-cheques occur when the buyers card has gone out of date

Has the buyer been in touch at all? PP won't pay you themselves either whether you claim or not I'm afraid. All you can do is file a NPB and give them a strike
Just a thought - did you put the right email address on your listing? If an email addy has ever been linked to your ebay but is no longer used for your ebay account, then it can sit as pending and the buyer CAN cancel that. Maybe there was an old email addy on the listing? Has been known to happen

What was the exact wording of the payment - in your paypal account not in the ebay bit

I've just logged into paypal and it describes the payment as an eCheque.

Then it lists the tranactions, on 19 May I had the original payment then on 29 May it just says Related Transaction - Cancelled.

It doesn't tell me anything else about it. It's def not on the wrong e-mail or anything, I've only ever one e-mail address for ebay and paypal.

Will wait and see what happens then will prob take your advise oneeyedvic, and send the letter like you said.

Thanks again
m paypal payments take abut 10 days to clear. This is because the credit card my bank account was guarunteed with went out of date
The buyer can cancel echeques that have not cleared.

The buyer cannot cancel an e-cheque UNLESS as the link says it has been sent to an unverified email address or an address not associated with PP. This is not the case for the OP - or at least it doesn't sounds this way, where are you OP??

I think what has happened in the OP's case is the cheque has bounced as in been bounced by his bank
how much moiney involved?
