Ferret problems
7 Answers
Hi, we have just started having problems with our ferrets, everything was fine for 12 months, but now the mating season has come they have been such a nightmare, i have Bob a vicectimised ( Cant spell sorry) hob, Pip female unspayed and emma spayed female, since the season pip has mothered emma that badly dragging her about and then bob joins in poor emma was loosing weight so we have brought a new cage and she is happy. but now Bob is going spare at pip, trying to mate 24/7 hurting her in the process her neck is so sore and if he comes anywhere near her she just screams, so then i split them up, i have made the decision to castrate bob and to spay pip, will this settle them down or will i still have problems, also how long does it take till there hormones are out of there system, any ferret people out there i would love to hear from you,
thanks
thanks

hi josaphine32 you will still have some problems as it is just the natutral thing. if poss i would take the hod ( male) away from the jills ( female ) and put him in another cage. in my ferrets, mateing will last for 6 to 8 weeks. just be careful with the bites on the jills neck, as could lead to infection. weight loss is common this time of year as is furr loss. try some of the cat milks on the market as they have good protain. but make it a treat now and again, also a raw egg mixed in with the milk will not hurt, but onces a week will do on the eggs. any more questions let me know will try to help were poss.
Hi they were split up after mating last week so now hence i have three cages, what i would like to know after spaying and castration how long will it be before they settle down till i can put them back together they all have 1 egg each and ferret vitaminsbut its more hormonal as they have all lived happily together for 15 months
hobbles , (castrated males) usually cause fewer problems , but some of them , like castrated dogs , will persist in mounting and causing general aggrivation . Check the ferret's vulva for swelling , once swelling has gone down , this should be alright for them to be together , they do need to mate or she can become ill or even die , unmated Jill's will stay on heat longer than mated Jill's , check their vulva often . usually this will go on between April and May , although can run over past May for maybe a few weeks , any problems , please do not hesitate to ask . we will help as far possible .
I don't have a problem with my hob mating my 2 jills
both jills are spayed and my hob is entire, the jills don't come into season so the hob feels no need to mate them.
Upon castration testosterone is out of the males system with in 6 ours but this does not decrease sex drive males will still mate a female in season.
So I would get your jill spayed but only worry about getting your hob castrated if you are worried about prostate or testicular cancers
