AVG 8.0 - Does it do what it says on the tin?

With only 6 more days of AVG 7.5 left, I'm going to have to decide to upgrade soon. Does it work properly, please?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Some people have reported that it's heavy on memory usage but most people I know seem to be satisfied. (4Candles reported that it working fine for him, in another AB thread, earlier this evening).
However, I can't give you a personal report because AVG 8.0 won't install under Windows Millennium so, like many others, I'll probably be switching to Avast:

read the first two reviews .... they sum it up well

it doesn't do it's job full time ... only when you remember
the majority (100%) of trade reviews (the ones who actually test it ... and don't just repeat what the postman told the milkman who heard it from .....) say ... it's free ....
the detection rate is in the low 80%s for actual detection
