Intelligent people can live their lives with their minds totally occupied with 'higher' matters, and never learn the 'nuts and bolts' things that the rest of us use to get through the day.
That said, it may be something of a generalisation to say that V.I.P.'s are all devoid of comon sense. My wife is very intelligent, and blessed with masses of common sense.

You are mistaking two different things. Qualifications do not necessarily equal intelligence.
Most academic qualifications are based on remembering information. This is quite different from applying the information or even just using it creatively.
That is why you get some very learned people who cannot do basic things like drive a car or manage their money correctly.

depends on the academic qualification and whence it came. A place I know, for example, gives you a mark out of 20. 12/20, no more, is what you get if you remember all the information. You only get more if you show 'evidence of independent thinking'.
Anyway, so many uni's in the UK now, and everyone goes there, a degree means you can hold your beer, little else.
