A synapse is a gap between nerve cells. It is good way of regulating neural transmissions as messages have to cross the synaptic cleft (the gap) in order for a neural transmission to continue.

Thank you so much, I was having an on-going debate with my friend about what they/it were/was, as he was claiming a "synapse" was when you (for example) you see somebody walking along, you blink and they've gone a lot further down the road, i.e. your brain stops working for a second but you don't notice it. Thank you for proving me right.
