what pc kit are you using ....
what OS on the PC?

each machine needs it's own account (ID and password) on the machine doing the sharing (server)

router? or just machine to machine (ad-hock)
Is the Asus running on Linux or Windows?
Question Author
Hello. The ASUS is running on Linux and all functions work correctly and connection to the internet by cable works also.
what about the PC?????????
Question Author
the desktop is windows xp with a netgear dg834g router which is correctly setup. I can't see that the difference in os makes any difference.. The desktop transmits the correct signal and the asus receives a 100% signal with other signals at a much lower level. I think I'll arrange to take the asus round to a known site where I can try to connect.
I'm confused.

Do you mean your Asus won't connect to your router wirelessly?
Question Author
Yes Ethel
How have you got your router set up? Mine, for example, has the MAC filter on so will block any wireless connections with an unrecognised MAC address; I also have the router limited to two connections.

Is there a firewall on the Asus? Have you tried connecting with it switched off?
How does
1 "can't connect to my desktop"
turn into
2 not connecting wirelessly to router.

"I can't see that the difference in os makes any difference"
(if the question is 1 - of course it does ... if 2 of course it doesn't - it does help when the question relates to the problem!)

... if wep, wap, psk or whatever security is enabled
you need to enter the key as part of establishing the connection
(assuming the relpy bears any resemblence to reality).

I daren't ask what "corectly setup" entails - obviously it's not ... or you'd be connected.
