Does anyone know where the phrase "pick up the mantle" meaning "to take over" originates from?

A guy on the radio said, "Yep, he always picks up the mantlepiece when we need him" :-)

"He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him..." This is from Second Kings Chapter 2 Verse 13 of the Bible and refers to Elisha taking over 'authority' from his father, Elijah. It has been used in similar senses...ie "he's the new guy responsible"...for various situations.
