DVD/Laser Disc comparisions (and future Media)

I remember back in the sixth form my old electronics teacher told us he preferred to watch his movies in the old (and big) Laser Disc format rather than the DVD format (bearing in mund that this was the late 90s and DVD was only just released  mainstream) I could recall he said the picture quality is better on Laser Disc.

Can anyone ellaborate on this quote? Is the picture really more better or was he having us on? How much memory doe's a LD carry compared to a DVD?

And regarding future media storage, Can anyone shed any light with Sony's Blu-Ray Discs and compare it with the forthcoming DVD-HD?

I also has a friend who swears by his Laserdiscs it's sort of like the vinyl of the movie world, I have seen a few movies on this and I have to admit that they are very good.

a note on Blu-Ray & HD-DVD, this technology is based on that a blue light laser has a smaller waveform that a red light laser and therefore you can carve smaller features onto a cd/dvd disk, I think that although this technology is interesting in itself does not really seem to be that much of an innovation,

IMHO I think it would be best to bide your time and wait for the market to bring in a new leap in technology rather then just a tweak to existing technology.

IMHO I think it may be prudent to wait for a real improvement in data storage technology. also you have to think about the format wars that always seem to happen when new data formats are brought out.

eg   VHS, beta-Max, P2000, LaserDISK

DVD+R,DVD-R,DVD RAM  etc..... 

so rushing out to the shops and buying your next prospective beta-Max may not be the smartest plan

it is usually best to wait to see what the market does

i fail to see why 1 media has to prevail nowadays

xbox look set to use dvd-hd and sony to use blu-ray unless one of them changes then both should be very popular and maybe this will transfer itself to other more mainstream areas such as movies etc etc

one other thing - the capoacity of these discs is 27ish gigs - and a std 4.7gig dvd is perfectly adequate for a movie and extras so what would we need all the extra room for ? will hi-definition need more storage space ?
