I eat whelks ..... they're lovely fried on brown toast with a drop of tabasco and pepper.......scrumptious!

most of my family and friends think i'm disgusting for eating them. I dont understand how people say they are gross when they haven't tried them.

Weeal, you have just reminded me of family holidays by the sea and the rest of my family eating them using a pin, gross! Never tried them and never will (am a wimp), need to lie down now, feel sick.

hey warpig, your thinking of winkles not whelks, whelks are big rubbery ugly things but taste gorgeous, winkles are small and look like snot but again tasty with vinegar.

I hope people still eat all the lovely seafoods, like whelks, winkles,mussels etc, great with bread and butter providing you put vinegar and pepper on them.

Did any of you when you were kids take the little black bits off the winkles and stick them all over your face like spots? er ok, I will go now probably just me.

Haven't had a winkle in ages either! (Sorry people there was just no way to type that without implying a prolonged dry spell...)
We used to stick the black bits to our faces too to pretend we had the plague and suchlike.

As for whelks, I eat them very often doused in vinegar and pepper. Also good with a nice garlicky mayonnaise the way they eat them in France. I think the best ones come from the South Coast. I had some in Scarborough recently and they were evil. Although I was being put off by my friend retching dramatically every time I ate one.
