This is almost impossible to answer given the different needs of different types of horse, and regional variations. A hardy cob that lives out and will only be used for hacking in the North of England will cost a loss less to keep, feed, insure etc than a Thoroughbred eventer in say, Surrey, that needs stabling, hard feed, specialised equipment etc. If this question is prompted by someone in your family wanting a horse, I suggest you get in touch with some local livery yards. There may be someone keeping a horse of a similar type to that which would suit you/your family, doing vaguely similar activities. I'm sure they'd be only too happy to give you an estimate of their annual outgoings. Whatever the answer, it's likely to be "too much"!
