Hi, haysi! :)
My boyfriend and I have been in a long distance relationship for almost eight years now and it works really well for us. To tell the truth, it was probably harder a few years ago when we were younger, as we were both a bit jealous and insecure, but now that we're older (and realise we can trust one another) it's fine.
I'm very independant, so I probably find it a bit easier than he does, but we spend almost every weekend together and are together non-stop from the Friday evening until the Monday morning. If we lived together we'd only see each other on week day evenings and even then I imagine we'd still have our own social lives. I love the way it is at the moment as I get to do my own thing during the week.
We speak at least three times a day on the phone, too.
We have discussed buying somewhere and living together and we've compromised (well, I've begged) that he will more than likely move down here. There are more prospects career-wise for him, although it's far more expensive, and I know that I would be desperately unhappy if I was to move away from my family.
Eight years sounds a long time, and it is, obviously, but I'm only 23 so I'm more than happy to not rush it when I have my whole life ahead of me. :)
