Hello, what is the legal basis for my local council charging me 15 a year for a permit so I can park my car on the street outside my house?

This is not a rant or a complaint I just wondered how it was possible, as on the face of it I should be allowed to park my car for free.

Thanks

Road Traffic Act 1991 and Traffic Management Act 2004
Tell them youd rather have double yellows instead.

why should you be allowed to park for free, you dont own the land.

It may be being done to stop congestion and allow you to park near your house. It will cost the council to implement such a restriction so 15 is hardly extortion is it, if it means you can park on your street
Main roads belong to Highways; maybe ur road belongs to the council.....do the council maintain the road? If so, they have every right as it's their property
You've been given the legalities of it by Oneeyedvic.

It is usually done in response to householders, living near a major shopping centre, hospital, train station or similar, who complain to the police and/or council about lack of parking near their homes because of shoppers/commuters etc parking in their street all day.

It my area it is 45 per year. :)
where i live it is 58 and the traffic wardens are like vultures..! we are restricted because we live near a university and a football ground
160 in central Edinburgh
15 per year where we are
One road I lived in was on top of a train station that had a massive car park but the street was used by commuters form 7am till 8/9pm and residents had no where to park. The first week it went up there was a beautiful row of yellow paper stuck to window screens.
Another road I lived was near to a large twice weekly market and on those 2 days it was impossible to park any where near your own front door if you decided to go out on that day.

Best thing ever permit parking although I may have something to say if it was 160 a year!

I have no issue with the permit and dont mind the 15 per year, as it does keep the road clear, however as I was writing the cheque to the council I remembered the good old days when it didnt cost anything and wondered about the legislation. Vic's answer was exactly the answer I was looking for, many thanks.
