MIDI is like a text document ! it is based on a syynthesizer that is buit into sound cards or emulated via software. the synthesizer contains all the sounds that can be played that is of varios instruments and their varios notes. each one of these sounds that lasts for a number of "samples" from the point of view of MP3 ecc has a code therefor with a simple number a whole sound is played whereas with mp3 that sound is composed of a number of samples. this is why midis r so small but not always of comparable quality as they r based on a prerecorded set of sounds. for this reason they cannot be used for human voice and realy r only used for classical music (that can still sound artificia) or instrumental only. it is like the synthesizer is a piano and ur written music the midi file u interpret the music and press the right keys.
infact often electronic keyboards (pro ones) output midi files of what u play allowing one person on a pc to compose an intire orchestra by himsef by playing the different parts outputting them into midis and the putting them together.
for this reason also they r used by phones for ring tones
Searching the web will often allow you to find most songs in midi format, as midis are generally royalty free. Midis are not compressed any more than mp3s, it's much older technology, it's just that the information they contain is a set of notes for the computer to play rather than an actual recording.
Putting something like ""sweet child of mine" midi" into Google will probably find a midi pretty quickly.
