On an old Mac, the system folder has a little Mac face on it when it is live - 'blessed'. Sometimes it can mysteriously 'unbless' itself , i.e the face disappears from the folder icon and the Mac won't boot up.
Some Mac gurus have prompted my decidedly ropey memory. I have to open and close the folder, or drag the System and Finder to the desktop and re-drag them back into the folder again to 'bless it'.
Thanks for your trouble though. :)
