Seat Ibiza CAT

Does anyone know if the Catalytic converters in Seat Ibiza'a have a history og "going"?? Basically i need a new cat after only 18,000 miles of a supposedly new one being installed. My mechanic tells me this happens with Seats but to me 18,000 miles seems like a very low mileage to have exhausted the cat ... As it stands my car will not pass the NCT (Irish MOT).  But i'd still like to know if this seems strange to anyone else, or perhaps its normal for Seats ... who knows

It does seem very unusual for a catalyst to fail after only 18,000 miles.  The reason for it's failure can be put down to two reasons:

 

1.  Build quality, or rather lack of it!

 

2.  Engine misfiring, or engine not running correctly causing unburnt fuel (or just rich fuel) to enter the catalyst.  This will cause the catalyst to overheat and then melt.

 

The garage you speak of, is it a Seat garage?
