kettles

Hello every one! i have no idea which section this question go in there is a choice of three but as it is vaguely to do with food i thought this section woud be best.

we recently brought a new kettle a brevel illuminator it worked ok for a few weeks but now every tme we boil it a plasticy TCP smell comes out from it a the water tastes fowl. i have emailed the manufacter but as yet had no reply. any sugestions?

Can't think of a reason for the smell / taint without looking at the kettle's design.

However, (and moving more into shopping / money & finance categories here), is it convenient to take it back to the place you purchased it? Since they are the ones who sold it to you, they have the obligation to provide you with a kettle 'fit for the purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act - which clearly the kettle doesn't do at the moment.

There shouldn't be a problem getting it exchanged for the same or even a different model. They may require 'proof of purchase', but this needn't be the receipt. If you paid by card, the 'signing-slip' or even a statement showing the debit from your account will suffice.

There are a few posters here who are pretty clued up on consumer issues, if you hang around they may have more to add.

Agreed, take it back - that said, we have a Breville 'Stay Warm' illuminating kettle which is 2 years old and is fine.

 

The company you purchased it from are your only recourse - that is who your contract is with - not the manufacturers. Receipt is obviously best if you have it, but card slip etc will suffice. You have to be able to prove you purchased it from there.

 

Interestingly, under "freedom of Information Act", if you can isolate the day and time, you may be able to request the cctv footage fot eh day in question - that to would obviously prove it.

Forgot to say - you say a few weeks - it likelihood, you will not get a refund but an exchange or even a repair.

 

As I said though - no personal problems with Breville

Oh, great! I bought exactly the same kettle yesterday. I bought it from Asda and am within my rights to return it for a refund or exchange within a year, as long as I have my receipt, although I have managed to exchange products without a receipt in the past! Asda are pretty good with returns, as are Tesco, so it's worth considering buying kettles, toasters, etc from either of these stores.

my water had the same tcp taste when i recently changed my cold water tap.....evidently its the hard water reacting to the metal it is coming into contact with....i had to change my tap so you may have to consider getting a different kettle
