You need to check the alternator belt first because it's most likely to be this. Ensure the engine is off and hold the belt between finger and thumb. Wiggle it a bit and see if it's loose. You shouldn't have any less than about 1/2 inch deflection. If it is loose then this is what's causing the noise - basically the belt isn't gripping the pulleys and so screaches as it trys to grip.
If this belt is okay then you need to check your cambelt. Usually it's behind plastic covers so you might not be able to do this. If you're comfortable taking the panel off then do so. Again, using the method above, wiggle the belt at its longest side. If it is loose then it will make a lot of noise BUT it is also dangerous. If the belt was to slip then it will damage your engine.
As for the 'pick up'... well, it could be a number of reasons. It could be damp on the electrical circuit, i.e. distributor cap (and inside), HT leads, or the coil. Do you know where these are? The spark plugs may also need removing and cleaning and regapping, or fit new plugs. It's quite difficult to give more advice without more info, because it could even be a cold start/choke problem.
