After a year you have to pay $8 (about 5), but that includes weekly pattern updates and also a completely thorough scan every week. Pretty cheap for a year - it's also totally compatible with all software, which is pretty important as some anti-virus software can cause a computer to crash. We wouldn't change ,but hope you get other views so you can make an informed decision. If you have any more questions just ask.....
When I registered for on-line banking with someone, I think it was the Halifax, I was given a code which gave me PC-cillin free. I am not aware of any plans to make me pay now or in future and I get regular updates. It seems fine and it has not given me any problems. Having said that, it has not really had to do anything. ;-)
I've used pc-cillin 98 and now pc-cillin 2000 and so far never had any major problems except when the virus patterns esceed the 900's then the software wouldn't automaticaly download latest pattern. 2000 has been problem free so far.I've used norton and had problems right from installation, don't know anything about macafee though. If you don't want to buy virus software try Trends House call, a free virus checker available from http://housecall.antivirus.com
I would also stand up for AVG. Free and it works. My only grudge is that the updates are monthly instead of weekely or so. I like to think they would release an 'emergency update' if a particularly nasty risk came along. http://www.grisoft.com
