Is it possible to use rendering sand for bricklaying because I have a number of bags of this sand already and no other use for it.

If this is well washed sharp sand with no variation in grading, you can use it for bricklaying. It will need plenty of water as the sand is very"hungry", and also plenty of plasticiser to make it workable. You may use hydrated lime as the plasticiser if you're not overly concerned about the mortar colour ( it will be quite light), this will also offer a certain amount of give in what will be a very strong bricklaying mortar.
If you have a fair bit of brickwork, then buy in some pit sand for brick laying. As nonomaybe says, soft washed sand will need a lot more water and can be messy - especially if you are not experienced. Quite often the difference between a DIY and 'professional' look, is using the corect materials.
