Can I add to the debate - I question beet because of the spelling - if clue had said 'sounds like' or had a question mark then beet could be it - but I prefer LEFT which is both red and a punch

I also question WELT which would have been a better answer if this had been the GK crossword

yes several debates over the last few hours - but I settled for left against strong arguments for beet and welt
