Russian Black Terriers

Has anyone got one?,have done some reaserch and really want one when my old boy goes over the rainbow bridge.As they are a fairly new beed just wondering if i should put my name on a breeders list ? also any advice welcome Thanks in advance

Contact the breed club secretary (Mrs Huxley) 01226 285822
who will be able to let you know of any members who have any puppies available or due, and will be able to put you in touch with someone in your area who has the breed, so you can visit them and meet their dogs, and chat about the breed before deciding if they are for you.

Sorry ,but I cannot understand how you can think of what dog you are having next when you still have a old faithful pal with you,don't you love your old pal?

Well I would not want to be without a dog for any length of time - if at all- and I think herbie is being very sensible in finding out all about a breed before taking the plunge, as so many people take on puppies/dogs without realising what they are really like to live with. You only have to look at some of the questions we get on here to realise some people have no idea what their chosen breed requires in the way of exercise, feeding, training, etc.

It is not disrespectful to an older dog, they all have to pass on and although some people say they don't want another, I am afraid I would want a replacement straight away if not before the oldie had gone. Often a puppy also gives an old dog a new lease of life for a while.

I'm with Garner on this one. I always end up with another dog sooner rather than later when one passes on but I can't think about it before the event. It almost seems like wishing them away.

I have always had a dog and cant imagine life without one,i love my old boy to bits but i know that he has had a good life and wanted for nothing,i will be heartbroken when he goes but life goes on and i will get another one.I met a wonderfull lady at a doggie event who had a russian terrier which was a PAT dog and i thought it would be something id like to do.I asked for advice from owners of the beed not for a lecture .Thanks Lankeela i know of Janet Huckley

I am with lankeela - I think you are being very sensible in researching the breed BEFORE you get one. I was a member of my dogs breed club for about 4 years before I was in a position to buy my dog (I had 2 GSD's and a BSD at the time and could not take on a fourth giant dog). It does not mean that you love your present dog any less.

When I eventually got my pup, my GSD was old and in a K9 cart with CDRM. For the last 12 months of her life she brought him up totally and she adored him - she always did like puppies. She did not lack any attention from us and he just added to her quality of life.

One thing I would say about Russian Black Terriers is that they are a working/guarding dog and a large one at that. I found this video on you tube (not very good quality) it gives you an idea of what they can do.

There has been at least one in the UK that was a police dog. Don't forget they are a Terrier and can be stubborn and are large enough when adult to get their own way!

I also agree that you should research a breed BEFORE getting a dog (although I have only ever had rescued mutts). However, I couldn't do it whilst an existing pet was still with us. PAT dogs are so worthwhile. My docile little Yorkie does a very good job at my mother's care home!

I have been so lucky to have wonderful companions in my time - as I'm sure you all have, and i have loved them all to bits. I have treasured their lives, their companionship, their loyalty and unconditional love and there is no way I would think about replacing a doggie (cat, etc etc )whilst the old faithful friend is still by my side. (apologies - replacement perhaps isnt the right word ) Sorry - but that's me and that's how I feel.
