I have tried to download Service Pack 3, it downloads then says it is installing, but I waited nearly 2 hours and packed it in, with the result it took half an hour to get back to normal. It would seem it has to uninstall the downloaded part. Does anyone know if it is even worth having SP3 ?

This review suggests installation should take less than 20 minutes and be painless - it also indicates you shouldn't really notice any difference afterwards

This suggests it may be your firewall that was causing the problem:

Hi, Dont touch SP3 if you have an AMD computer. It can create a black-screen start-up loop.Microsoft are working on a repair patch
