This is all the Foreign & Commonwealth

Sorry, it all went wrong!

I am assuming that you are British.

This is all the Foreign & Commonwealth Office says about passports:

British tourists visiting Mexico need a valid passport and should obtain a tourist card  (known as the "FMT") available from Mexican Consulates, Mexican international airports and border crossing points and most airlines serving Mexico.

You could try contacting the Mexican Embassy:

If your passport is soon to expire, then it probably is not a machine-readable one.  Why not get a new one now anyway?

You need to look at the precise dates.  You will need at least 6 months validity on the date of your return journey.  To avoid worry, you may as well renew it now.
ASk your airline or travel agent to look in TIM (the travel index manual). It is the bible for all passport/visa requirements for all countries. They know how to use it and it is exhaustive. Most other places dont know that what is in TIM is the final word on the subject and an embassy employee may also not have the latest on the subject of passport validities.
