Common term for the virus is rubella. The term "german measles" comes from the fact that the rash is similar to that of measles, i.e., germane to measles. The old spelling of "germane" was "german..."

German measles =  Rubella.  Rubella became  commonly known as 'german' measles because in 1814 it was first described in the German Medical Literature.
