Thanks to all of you who answered my question, especially those who gave the links for me to look through. We have a long running 'pose the question' activity during most days, where a member of our management team asks the admin team to solve their riddles and find information. The 'A' Roads of the UK is the lastest. I knew the majority, but was then intrigued as to how all the roads were named etc. So thanks to you all and we have managed to find extra information which will blind them with science!!
