Contraceptive Pill

Can I go to the doctor and ask to be put on a specific contraceptive pill? I am not taking any at the moment but would like to go on Marvelon as I have heard good feedback from friends. Do they have to honour this?

Any feedback on it would also be good!

you can ask - they will probably still want to go through all the details with you to check that that is the best one for you. Everyone reacts differently to the different hormones in each type of pill.  I use the patches, simply because i'm useless at remembering to take pills.  I don't think they have to 'honor' it as such, but in my experience with GP's if you want something you have to stand your ground to a certain extent. good luck.

I'm sure the answer is 'no', your GP does not have to honour your request if he or she thinks that particular brand of pill is not suitable for you for one reason or another. I would have thought though that provided your GP thinks you're suitable to take the combined pill (some women aren't, for instance, if they suffer migraines or are heavy smokers or very overweight) he or she would probably prefer to prescribe you something you feel happy taking. (By the way I also take Marvelon and have done for the past 10 years and I'm very happy with it. I'd tried two other brands before Marvelon and didn't get on with them.)

i also use marvelon and have done for years without any problems. I tried other brands including the contraceptive injection but marvelon would be my recommendation. i have never had any probs with my gp but i guess as the others have said, it depends whether it suits you and your medical history.

Another good one is Microgynon30, I have been on this pill for 5 years and have never had any sort of side effects or anything. A few of my friends also recommend this pill.

I was on Microgynon30 for 6 months and had a terrible time, weight gain, mood swings galore. 

 

As you know, it differs from person to person, no one can give you recommendations.  If you haven't been on one before, your GP will probably start you on a low dosage pill, to minimise the side effects as much as possible and make sure you're not getting more hormones than you need. In the last 18 months I've been on about 6 or 7 pills, and I'm still not sure I've found the right one.  Good luck though ^_^

If your doc says no go to your nearest family planning clinic. I did this last month told them i wanted to change to a different pill and my prescrition was written out within 5 mins.
