Lifespan of Money

I don't know why but I wandered last night how long, say a �20 note would stay in circulation. Imagine all those grubby hands they go through.

Well this is about American money but I imagine UK money is similar:

"The average life of a dollar bill is eighteen months. Five dollar bills last about fifteen months, with twenties remaining in circulation for two years. Ten dollar bills have about the same lifespan as singles do, and the larger denomination bills can last up to eight years. "

Money, note and coin, is a very efficient way of passing germs. I cringe when a checkout operative is coughing and sneezing.

the �5`s last less time as they are passed around more than say a 20 or a 10

new features are in pace to make new notes last longer , but there not getting used in this country "yet"

They must replace the coins more often than they did years ago, because you never see a worn coin these days.

I have some early George V shilling coins on my desk, and they are very worn. Imagine how many hand they have been through.

Interesting to note though, the tail sides are very much more worn than the head sides. Anyone know why this is so?
