Snooper - Laser detector/parking sensor
My friend is trying to talk me into getting one of these to avoid any potential speeding tickets
N.B. Do gooders who can only say dont speed need not reply!!!
Anyway the theory is that they are legal as they are used as a parking sensor, a side effect of them is that they will scramble a policemans laser speed gun. If it was solely a laser scrambler then they would be illegal
My questions are ....
Does anyone have one of these?
What do you think of it?
Does it work?
Is it worth the money?
Is it still legal?
Any advise/comments greatfully received

well if its illegal to use then surley its illegal to sell,
no, you can sell the spray that makes your number unreaderable by a camera, but it is against the law to use it
to evade detection. the spray has been on sale at shows that i have attended ( large stand with pictures, before and after) they even had a camera at one show to prove it works

The English legal process is developed through case law - which means that the outcome of landmark legal cases drive future decisions. Unless the Government of the day decides it doesn't like a particular legal ruling so it bolsters up the law in that area by passing another Act.
It's an interesting debate, and we can pontificate all we like on here, but it is likely to remain a grey area until a few more cases have come to light and are decided.
Since you are 'up4it', up4it, why not stick your head above the parrapet and see what happens? A number of us, would love to learn the outcome.

I had an earlier model which was just a laser scramle unit and was made by the same company (Snooper) i assume they use the same technology and have developed it further.
Dr Filth is correct, they are not illegal to sell, they are just illegal to use.
My unit had two devices installed under the front number plate and gave an audiable signal inside the car when a laser was detected. Then, you made sure you wree under the limit and switched it off allowing the laser to detect your speed (which should be okay by now as you will taken made sure of this). This should eliminate suspicion from whoever is trying to detect your speed.
It worked like a dream, I was given the name of a man who had a speed gun and we met on a trading estate up the M40 to test it out and on every occassion, he could not get a reading. We tested it from many angles and he spent a full hour with me (40).
It also came with a free 1 year insurance policy that would cover my costs should i receive a ban for points accumalation.
My advice is to get one, even if its just to give you a warm fuzzy feeling that the do-gooders on here would disapprove

dr filth with all due respect not everybody who buys a tin of spraypaint has the intentions of disguising their registration number in order to avoid detection by a speed camera as spraypaint obviously has many uses. the peice of equipment we are all talking about here only has one purpose in mind if purchased so i think there is a bit of a difference
If you are coming up with examples I would say its more like ....
Buying a door stop and using it as a door stop and then getting arrested for possessing a dangerous weapon i.e. it could be used to hit someone with
Remember I am buying a parking sensor to use as a parking sensor - That is not illegal
If I used it as a laser jammer then that could be considered illegal just like if I used a door stop to hit someone with it would be considered illegal .... if I am caught using it for that purpose
P.S. Thanks Compostella, you get the prize for actually supplying a helpful answer lol

I do realise that in the posted case the point was made that he did not have a garage door opener but I don't think that was the decisive point.
These things are fought on the "balance of probabilities" not "beyond all reasonable doubt"
I think it would be your responsibility to convince a court that you did not have it for the purpose of evading detection.
Just saying "It's a parking sensor - see" will not get you off the hook.
Having said that I think it's unlikely that you'd get caught - but if you are I wouldn't bet on your getting off.
Ask yourself "Do I feel lucky"
