Why not do route 66? I know it's not strictly coast to coast (Chicago to LA) but it is more famous and has a lot of history in the route. Many books and websites focus on this route and much of contemporary America is covered by the route. I'm very jealous of this plan - do you need a shotgun rider?

Thanks for the suggestion but i really want to see Miami. Plus ive got relatives living in Orlando who i could stay with for a few days.

I drove down from Mephis to New Orleans last September. The main tip I was given was not to stop for anyone when out on the open road. I don't know where you are from, but in the UK if someone flashes thier lights at you from behind it means that you have a fault on your car, and to stop so they can show you. I was told that in the States you should never stop for someone flashing thier lights.

The route you travel depends a lot on what you want to see... whether you're interested in historic sites or architecture or arts or parties etc.... I'd say travel through New Orleans during Mardi Gras if you can, stop in Orlando for Busch Gardens, Disney etc... Savannah, Georgia is beautiful... in Alabama there's going to be a lot of civil rights movement history... in all the southern states you're going to find memorials to the American Civil War... and slavery...

I would suggest staying more south then going across the middle... the middle states don't have much of anything other than farmland and sparse population... Drive out of fl into georgia and then move west from there... the southern and border states - arizona, texas,  new mexico are all going to have a lot of Indian (Native American) and Mexican influence and other stuff like that as well.. if you go that way... when you hit arizona you can start moving north, and then make a stop in Las Vegas before continuing on to LA...

just some general suggestions

As far as Route 66 goes, for you to drive from Miami to Chicago.. Just to get there is at least three days brutal driving... and usually in the states flashing lights means that you're going too slow in the fast lane, move over into one of the slower lanes.

Use this car site www.driveaway.com you pick up and deliver cars and only pay for the gas. I did the following trip Philadelphia to West Virginia (By Greyhound) picked a car up there drove to Chicago then through to Oregon where i delivered it. Then i went from Oregon to San Fran then took another greyhound to L.A. Picked up another car and delivered it to Florida and then took a greyhound up back to Philly. Great trip highly recommended. Here are the sights to see...Lake Tahoe, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and so much more.
