Family tree magazines

I want to start looking into my family tree. I am definately signing up with ancestry.co.uk, but could anybody recommend a magazine as well?

Hi TT ..... to be honest I would not recommend buying any magazines .... whilst they are interesting, they don't really help you with YOUR tree if you see what I mean. Best to use ancestry, genesreunited etc. Far more useful. Magazines are expensive for what they are, and to be honest it's expensive enough once you get started .... buying certificates etc ......................
I you have specific questions about how to get started or what to do when you get stuck just post them here - far more useful than books and mags.

In 2 years my tree has grown 2980 individuals .... and nearly all has been done on ancestry and genes.

Thanks very much echokilo. Have just registered on ancestry and busy deciding who to look for 1st. Will have a leaf through the mags but will probably give them a miss if they don't give the advice that I need to help me begin.

Thanks TT - I started by getting a big sheet of paper and writing down everything I knew already. Then try and start finding people you already know the names on on the 1901 census ..... failing this look for a birth you might know of around 1920 - ish ..... this should give you the mother's maiden name, so then you can look for the marriage of these parents to confirm the forenames ..... once you have these, these 2 individuals SHOULD be on the 1901 census ............... For a great, free place to store your findings you can create a website at www.tribalpages.com (it only costs you to upgrade it later if you want to add photos etc ..... and I think it was �18 for the year (which is cheaper than buying a CD Rom software version plus it means you can make your tree available on line when you start to find other people looking for the same people as you ................ Do let me know if I can help you, as I have had to learn as I go along, so anything I can do to make it earlier for someone else I am happy to do - it can be frustrating at time, but just when I think I have finished with mine, something else pops up ............... keep in touch TT

Or even EASIER for you ...... .EARLIER!!!!??? More haste less speed ................ oh and one more tip for now .... if you meet other people on line who are searching your people too, ALWAYS verify the information they give you for yourself - I failed to do this a couple of times at the beginning, then found errors and spend DAYS removing the errors and trying not to delete the correct stuff along the way.
Oh and one more ..... if you have eldery relatives, go and see them NOW before it's too late ........... a bot morbid I know, but once they're gone they're gone taking decades of fabulous memories with them ..... so wish I had spoken to my grandparents when I still had them here.

Be warned tickledtrout. It gets addictive. I agre with not buying magazines.I did a few and they weren't a ny hlp really. I found a cousin and family I knew nothing about and we now are in contact,(Fathers brothers first marriage ..never mentiond in family)

Thanks very much for your advice. Have made good progress today. Managed to get back to the 1820s by getting my Grandfather's parents names. I am addicted already!

Good for you TT ...... well done! Wait til you get really carried away like I did and start tracing all the indirect lines back too!! What are the main names you are researching, out of interest? It would be so spooky if we had common surnames!

The names on my mother's side are Wadham and Mulrine. The Wadhams all lived in Dorset. The Wadham's are the name I have made a lot of progress with today,the Mulrines were Scottish but have no further info on them. My father's family were Davis and Preston and are all from Yorkshire. Already know bits about both of these but no details past my Grandparents

Hi Diane, the Preston's in my family are all from Leeds, my Great Gran was Heath, also from Leeds.
Hi Echokilo the only Mulrine I know the name of is my Great Grandfather. He was from Scotland, No idea as yet to which county. I think he was John, possibly born in 1885 . He married Harriet Payne but she was from Brighton.

I have a subscription to the Genealogist - and I never use it .... it's search facililty is not as good as ancestry and for BMD records it only gives the images and not the transcription version you can access on ancestry .... stick to ancestry - well worth the money. EK

There is a John Mulrine on the 1901 Scotland census in Glasgow. Have searched for a wedding to Harriet Payne, but not found anything. Plenty of Paynes in Sussex with Harriet as a middle name though. Have you come across these other spellings of the Scottish surname? MULRAIN, MULRAINE, MULREIN ??

The Geneaologist website does have a surname distribution map but only for Eng & Wales:
1880-1900 NO Mulrines in E & W
1900-1920 3 Mulrines in Lancashire
1920-1940 1 each in Glamorgan and London, 2 in Durham and 4 in West Midlands ... not sure if or how this helps, but it might narrow things down for you perhaps.

Thanks echokilo, found out tonight of my Nan that John Mulrine was from Glasgow. The info of her is very limited, he was in the merchant navy, Harriet Sophie Payne abandoned her and her brothers/ sisters when she was very small and she was brought up in a convent. All the children were born in the London Kent area. My Nan was born in 1924 and she was the youngest.
Thanks also for the hints to the Genealogist site, have just bought some software which gives a free 90 day subscription with so many free credits so will use that but will probably stick with ancestry

Is this your ancestor? Harriet Sophia Payne 1861 Jan-Feb-Mar Marylebone, London, Middlesex ..... Seems a little too early to be the mother of someone born in 1924 though ........ I think it's very sad when you come across mother's having abandoned children like this, but I guess they had their reasons which we may never know or understand .... and often the children are better off bought up elsewhere - it's all very interesting though and makes for great social history reading .... just wait til you find the gypsies and the theives as I did with mine TT !!!!

Hi Echokilo, I think she did have a sister called Mary but she was getting a bit confused when she was talking about it. Her mother was married twice, 1st to a Nicholson may have been Robert in 1912, and then to Mulrine so there are 2 sets of surnames and she couldn't remember which child had which name.
Know about a bit of dirty laundry, Mulrine was a bigamist so the marriage to Harriet was illegal which my Nan finds hard to handle.

I have plenty and some living relatives who have refused point blank to help with information, so they obviouisly have some upsetting memories too.
