I'm sure Kate will put us right next Sat ..she's fond of these odd little clues as seen by the Bevin Boys !
You jog along and then she slips in a stumper ...Good Luck .
The Order is Gadiformes - includes some 10 Families -
e.g.
Gadidae - cod, haddock (aka 'offshore hake'). tomcod, etc
Merluccidae - hake
Macruridae - whiptail
gade (Motella argenteola) is a small British fish of the cod family; A pike, so called at Moray Firth; -- called also gead!
I have gone for Hake ... the clue asks for Fish of an Order which includes cod ... the clue does not ask for a 'fish of the cod family'
This discussion will rage until next week when we get the answer, it seems BUT taize, I am afraid Chambers does not show gade as a small fish:
Gadus
n the cod genus, typical of the family Gadidae .
[Latinized from Gr gados the hake or similar fish]
gade or gadoid n a fish of the genus Gadus, to which the cod and hake belong.
gadoid adj belonging to, or resembling, this genus.
To me the question is asking for the ORDER of fish to which Cod, Whiting etc belong and that is Gade.
